Living in an Eco village showed me that composting can make a significant positive change to the environment. It’s a simple way to recycle organic waste. We use it to get rid of community leftovers as everyone contributes with kitchen scraps also emptying dry toilets and putting it in compost bins where the waste is collected.

Regularly turning the compost and managing the bins are tasks we do together. If it smells bad it probably means its not decomposing.  At my home we place food scraps in an outdoor compost bucket and when it’s full we spread it on a pile at the back of the garden. Finished compost also can be useful as a natural fertilizer and it’s way more environmentally friendly then synthetic fertilizers. It’s a straightforward effective practice that supports sustainability, community and environmental health. I’ve gained practical knowledge about waste management, soil health, and sustainable gardening. For anyone considering volunteering in an eco village, I highly recommend getting involved in composting it’s a rewarding and impactful experience.
